The principal road to Wales and the west in Roman times used to pass through what is now Weston Village. Parts of the road can be explored today. The energetic can walk up onto Lansdown from our Bed and Breakfast and visit the mysterious Beckford's Tower. The Cotswolds Way passes right behind Weston Lawn giving direct access to the fields and beyond. Further along Lansdown, which is the southern most escarpment of the Cotswold Hills, is the Civil War site of the Battle of Lansdown. Here there is a memorial to Sir Bevil Grenville the Royalist commander who died securing a rather pointless victory over the Parliamentarians. The story goes that one of his troopers guarding prisoners by an ammunition cart carelessly dropped his cigar butt. Even in those days smoking was bad for your health! People visit Bath for many reasons. As well as good Bed and Breakfast, there is plenty to do and see for both adults and children. Bath is a designated World Heritage City with its famed Roman Hot Baths, Abbey and Georgian architecture. Many of the buildings that you see today were built in the 18th century when Bath became the society venue for those taking the waters, attending balls, or just wanting to be seen. Jane Austen lived here and based some of her classic novels in Bath. Admiral Lord Nelson, hero of the Battle of Trafalgar, came to see Emma Hamilton when she had apartments near Pulteney Street. Today you can join a guided tour on foot or by bus or just plan your own sightseeing, shopping and eating! Bath has restaurants, pubs and cafes in abundance suiting all tastes and pockets. There is a pub serving meals and real ales within a short walk of Weston Lawn Bed and Breakfast. Sports facilities include Golf Courses, all year Tennis, Bowls, Swimming and other activities in the city sports centre. Stay with us at the right time and have a day at the Races or watch Bath Rugby! For evening entertainment there are cinemas, The Theatre Royal, as well as various pubs and clubs (or so our children tell us). Some of the finest places to visit within a reasonable drive from Bath are Wells (cathedral and caves), Glastonbury, Cheddar Gorge in the Mendip Hills, Stonehenge, South Wales with castles and abbeys, the Cotswolds, Houses and gardens open to the public, Avon Wildlife Park and Bristol with its Zoo and Docklands. If you are travelling to the West Country we can recommend a stay at Upton Farm on the North Cornish Coast, between Port Isaac and Tintagel. It is within walking distance of one of England's finest, and lesser known, beaches Trebarwith Strand. This is where we take our holidays! Click on Upton Farm for a link to the web site. |
